Confused Love
"I didn't know it would hurt so much..." That quote can sum up the whole film. Two neighbors decide to have an affair after findng out their spouces are having an affiar with each other. The only trouble is they're both meek and loving people, which leads what was orignally intened to be revenge into an actual relationship. The ending of this film is personally one of my favorite sequences ever filmed, and the score is just plain beautiful. I'm not usually drawn to films completley revolving around a relationship, but this film lifts itself above the meets-sex-marries-fights-heals-dies scenario it seems most Hollywood films wallow in presenting a haunting character study that will leave you in awe for weeks.

SUBTLE ASIAN ART-HOUSE FLICK
The first time I watched this film, I thought it incredibly artsy-fartsy in a French sort of way. I watched it again and found it rich, subtle and gorgeously filmed. In Hong Kong in 1962, a man and a woman move into adjoining apartments. The woman's husband & the man's wife are always away on business. Left alone so much of the time, the two naturally form an attachment which develops into guilty love. But since the woman won't leave her husband, the man moves to Singapore, thereby ending the relationship. Sad and poignant to be sure. The musical score is an important feature of this film: a lovely cello-based melody is used too often, however. And Nat King Cole sings a couple of songs in Spanish. Worth watching for the gorgeous camera-work alone: light, shade, colors and textures have seldom been more beautifully presented.
