<[:-} a whole lot of shankin’ goin’ on
this double feature is a study in contrasts. “teenage gang debs” is a new york roughie in the mode of the findlay / amero team, but i didn’t recognize any of the almost 30 pseudonyms they have listed in imdb. the level and quality of misogyny is a match for michael findlay’s efforts. its a pretty atmospheric b&w film, with the knife fight scene featured in the something weird video promos. “terry,” one of only two credits, both 1966, for “diane conti,” springs from a simplistic script fully formed as a beautiful gutter femme fatale. its hard to believe someone as attractive and comfortable in front of the camera as she is here did not have significant acting work before and after this movie. the rest of the cast are competent, but mostly there for image and attitude. the gals are suitably slutty, the guys look like refugees from a kenneth anger leather film. the betrayal and violence are medieval in pace and meanness, with plenty of murders, gang rapes, and the like, but the fight scenes are hilariously lame. in one scene where three guys are supposed to be killing one other guy, it looks like they are giving him nougies. “teenage strangler” celebrates the teenage fantasies of middle class, 30 something, mid 60s, huntington west virginia. its like pat robertson tried to make a ron ormond film. the result is beyond suck, so much so as to be amusing. this has to be the wimpiest, wussiest bunch of teen “rebels” ever committed to film. oddly enough, the fight scenes are a lot more physical than the ones in “...debs.” like a lot of hick projects, there is uneven direction, with an eye to please the egos of the various participants. the sound isn’t that bad, and the film looks pretty good in most spots, but odd reels of bad film stock (or a misguided attempt at artiness) make for some odd, reddish segments. the “huntington astronauts” with a b-52s haired woman with an eccentric wit backed by an acoustic guitar player (who can somehow make it sound like electric guitar, bass, drums, and sax) play “yipe stripes,” a song about high fashion, with appropriately hideous costume to match. southern culture on the skids must have been taking notes. at the end, the camera zooms in on shaking asses, a surprising swing from the prevalent moral tone, and a possible post-production add-on. there are two public service shorts i didn’t have the time or patience to really do justice to. i was forced to watch too much of that diseased genre when i was young, and i didn’t see the humor in it then. i’ve never been good at “spot the newbie” but i think jason “exorcist” miller might be in the first one, playing a jd. the second one, “dance, little children” showed promise, with a v.d. via rock ‘n’ roll theme, creepy pseudo-hip narration, poor girls getting pumped, infected, and dumped by rich boys, casual hotel-bound pickups, and a goober clone with blacked out front teeth that shine in the incompetent lighting. courtesy of the state of kansas.
