DISTURBING RUSSIAN WAR FILM
With a little research one could easily compile a sizeable list of films entitled "The Horrors of War as Seen Through the Eyes of a Child." Certainly Rene Clement's 1952 classic FORBIDDEN GAMES would be near the top. And so would this 1985 Russian film which documents the Nazis' burning and murder spree during their invasion of Russia in WWII. Long after you have forgotten the atrocities depicted here, you will remember the shocked, stunned, anguished face of the 13 year-old peasant boy who has seen sights no one, least of all a child, should ever have to see. True, the film is lengthy and at times the camera lingers too long on the boy's face. If it is the director's intention to burn this tortured face into our consciousness, then he has succeeded. Not a easy film to watch (but then what movie about war is?). Not recommended for small children.
