buckalew succeeded in creating fun, seemingly innocent, movies through inspired casting and locations. most of the “hillbilly” stuff is ludicrous but enough genuine moments sneak in to raise his movies to quasi-anthropological status. the country part of “country cuzzins” is nearly on a par with his masterpieces: “sassy sue” and “the pigkeepers daughter.” rene bond, as “billie jo peabody,” is achingly sweet. the city part of the movie is by-the-numbers filler. “midnight plowboy” has cute women and an odd charm, but the apparently improvised dialogue by john tull, as “junior,” is so awful my cringe muscles got sore from overuse.
