NOTHING TO GET FRENZIED ABOUT
Most critics agree that Hitchcock's string of first rate films ended with 1963's THE BIRDS. Of the final five subpar efforts, FRENZY might be said to be in the middle: not as bad as TOPAZ or TORN CURTAIN but not quite as good as MARNIE or FAMILY PLOT. The faults are obvious: too long (115 min.); a pedestrian plot involving mistaken identity; a rather weak cast (I mean Jon FINCH(!)in the lead role). Finch may have impressed in Shakespeare, but he's no Connery (MARNIE) or Newman (TORN CURTAIN). That Hitch chose to include the disgusting, almost pornographic shot of the strangled victim's protruding tongue is enough in itself to demonstrate that his judgment and taste had all but abandonded him. If FRENZY had been made by any other director than Hitch, it would probably be all but forgotten today.
