the golem is activated by a kaballist rabbi to stop an impending progrom in medieval prague. the highlights of this movie are the ones that reveal the golem’s innate humanity. in the emperor’s palace during “the festival of the roses,” a circle of curious hand maidens check him out with open admiration. one gives him a flower. he reaches out to brush her with his fingertips and they all scamper off in fear. he sniffs the flower and his face forms a smile that turns sad. during his final rampage, where he has been reactivated by a jealous man, he kidnaps the beautiful, highly sexual daughter of the rabbi, whose dalliance with “florian,” the sissified emperor’s courier, sparked the jealousy in the first place. he lays her limp body down on a flat rock. what happens next is left to the imagination. (“florian,” festival, there’s a lot of flower stuff here.) the golem's brief reign of terror ends when he tenderly lifts up a small girl who doesn’t run from him. she curiously pulls off his star, inadvertently deactivating him. innocence exorcises the evil of jealousy. the italian film lab seriously damaged this b&w movie by tinting it to match some obscure italian print.
