to appreciate this movie, you have to view it in the context of the risk tian zhuang zhuang and everyone else involved took by making it. otherwise this isn’t in the same weight class as zhang yimou’s movies, but it is well worth checking out. the cinematography is not as beautiful as zhang’s, but the scenery is just as fascinating. lu li ping doesn’t have gong li’s breathtaking beauty, but her earthy attractiveness is more convincing as a peasant and less distracting from the story. there’s a lot of very heavy handed symbolism. the reasons why the victims were singled out are intentionally glossed over, to reinforce the often arbitrary nature of the terror that surrounded everyone. the real enemy is not a particular economic system but soulless, power mad bureaucracy and mindless, gutless conformism.
