SPOILERS? it took an ape woman to make a real man out of him. this carlo ponti production is actually a good, very well acted, warm hearted movie dressed in a psychotronia suit. a low rent "impresario," while producing some catholic church function at a convent, discovers a pretty young woman working in the kitchen who is unfortunately pretty much covered in fur from head to toe. he takes advantage of her vulnerability and innocence to talk her into leaving the convent and letting him have her meager savings to create a side-show attraction featuring her. she doesn't have a clue what she's getting into. when he attempts to pimp her to a "professor" who wants to "study" her virginity, she stands up to him and returns to the convent. the sisters won't let him take her back without getting married, so he turns the wedding procession into a degrading public spectacle where onlookers reach out and grab her fur. when he balks at sleeping with him, she threatens to get an annulment. in bed, he complains "you're tickling me," referring to her fur. aoon she confidently stars with him in a successful burlesque in paris. he shoots a gorilla and triumphantly poses with his foot on its body. she's heard to piteously cry "my father." she has curly, over-styled hair (and facial fur), eye makeup, and glitter. with her gauze like clothes all but rendered useless by strong backlighting, strong enough to silhouette the hair on the inside of her splayed thighs, she conquers him with her sexuality, as he grovels at her feet, reaching for her ankles. the scene ends as she is removing what's left of her clothes. next we see her in bed, in curlers, learning from a doctor that she is pregnant. the doctor wants it aborted. her husband is on the fence, seeing the doctor's point but also mindful of the marketing possibilities of a furry baby. she goes off on him, and eventually gets all the way through to him. he becomes a fully loving, if not completely honest husband. she gives birth to a normal baby, and the hormonal changes of pregnancy make all her fur fall off, presumably ending her attraction as a performer. a family of dwarves try to get him to represent them, but he points out that competition has become too stiff, that novelty acts have to be "really special." the convent balks at continuing to feed and house them, so at the film's end he has taken a real job in a bulldozer factory, and is content with his life. every aspect of the movie is good, with annie giradot's performance really excelling. she deserves the critical praise that was lavished on john hurt for his histrionic and much less plausible performance in "elephant man." she is both utterly believable and sympathetic at all times, bringing a amazing depth and warmth to her role. the preparation and enjoyment of food plays a big role in the film, helping convey its warmth and humanity. the movie is dubbed, but is perhaps the best job of dubbing i have ever seen, and it doesn't dilute the impact.
