"Gonzo Superhero Epic from Hong Kong"
This is a really neat movie which begs for a detailed review, but I'm gonna try to keep it short (besides there are lots of reviews already out there for this movie).
I have the VHS tape and will some day get the DVD because it's a classic in modern Hong Kong Camp,
repleat with the over-the-top martial arts, and the vivid and hyper stylized exploits one would expect to see in a comic book. Yet it works and works well. It doesn't hurt to have Maggie Cheung (Thief Catcher), Anita Mui (Wonder Woman) and Michelle Yeoh (Invisable Woman) either! Yeah, those may be some familiar names, but they've nothing to do with their US counterparts [and Hong Kong doesn't think twice about doing those things]. These three fine actresses embrace their roles, and at times with poignant gusto. Anthony Wong plays a sadistic, mute, and immensely powerful character named Number Nine, who is an 'adult cannibal' with magical powers, working for an evil eunuch sorcerer who wants to steal babies for his little 'cannibal army'. Wong gives the ladies a real hard time too, despite their extraordinary skills. I like this movie; despite it's sheer craziness there is an interesting evolution in character development and relationship. Hey, there's a PLOT for god's sake!!
From Stomp Tokyo: "Our story begins on a dark (but not stormy) night. In some indeterminate future setting, Hong Kong babies are being kidnapped right and left. Clueless, the police flail about, trying to find the culprit. An invisible visitor (guess who?) informs the police chief that his son is next, and mere minutes of screen time later, we watch the child float out of a nearby window. The child is almost-but-not-quite rescued by Wonder Woman, who approaches the scene by running across some handy telephone wires. She's not content to let her fingers do the walking. " If you like camp, cult, kung fu, sci-fi, fantasy etc- Watch This Movie!! I give this a solid 8 out of 10/ 4 out of 5 stars.
