i should have read the book first. i had a hard time following this. early on, tsar nicholas writes “i shot a crow today” and “nice weather” into his journal, demonstrating his subhuman lack of concern, as his unsupplied conscripts (one bullet per seven people per day) die like flies in wwi and the people back home suffer from extreme famine. i only understood this because it was taken straight from trotsky’s account of the revolution. he liked to quote such banal entries, the only entries, from days of key events like the dissolution of the duma. i’m sure that if i were better informed i could have appreciated the rest of the movie. there is some impressive imagery, but how anyone but a history scholar or a film student would get that much from this movie escapes me.
