<[:-} klaus kinski "krimi"
in the '60s, germany made enough films from the crime novels of english novelist edgar wallace ("king kong") to constitute an entire genre, called "krimis." they remain essentially unavailable in america, despite being visually stylish, bluntly shocking movies that, though minus the gore, provide the direct inspiration of the later, better known italian giallos. "fear without frontiers" devotes a chapter to them. i watched only enough of "the bloody dead," with sam sherman's commentary on, to try to find out if he had adulterated any part of "creature with the blue hand," "the original movie." specifically, i wanted to know who had provided the english dubbing. its an entertaining movie to watch, made more so by a relatively restrained performance from klaus kinski. the dialogue is really bizarre, and was pretty trippy, largely due to its often unexpected lines, but wore thin the second time i watched it. it seems to have been written with the intent of sacrificing the original dialogue for any lines that seemed to match the actor's lip movements while still having some relationship with the action, however perverted. the butler seems exceedingly fond of the phrase "exceedingly odd." in the very complex denouement, the line "i authorize you to offend anyone you like" is said. its a shame more "krimis" aren't available on video, preferably restored, widescreen DVDs with subtitles. obscure kinski movies seem to get released regularly, and he was in several "krimis," including the 1961 remake of "the dead eyes of london," which is said to be one of the most impressive examples.
