this movie is very dark and irritatingly theatrical, but still a “must see.” tim blake nelson apparently retained most of the dialogue, direction, and symbolic hooks from his play, and it detracts from the realism necessary to support the pitch black tone of this movie. allan corduner is given some awkward lines to deliver, but manages to create dr. nyiszli’s character in a very restrained and affecting way. the contrast between this role and his arthur sullivan character in “topsy-turvy” is amazing. harvey keitel is overall very good, but his thick accent is hammy and obtrusive. no one else affects an accent. natasha lyonne continues to show strong talent and maturity way beyond her 24 years. mira sorvino is unrecognizable without glamor make-up. she merged so well into her role that i’m still not sure who she played. i was surprised to see her name when i punched this up in imdb. steve buscemi is always good, but somewhat miscast here. david arquette does better than i would have expected, but is too lightweight for the importance of his role. the redeeming ending plays pretty false.
