with douglas fairbanks’ gaucho costume, the waxed womb broom on his face, and thick 1 inch diameter rings in each ear, i was expecting this to be an unintentional hoot. he does buckle swash all over the place, but he maintains a proletarian humor that makes him the author and not the butt of the joke. his seemingly effortless acrobatics are jaw dropping. one scene proves he could have been the best tarzan. finding out that he was 44 years old when this was released (1927) makes it even harder to believe. he would be dead 12 years later, of a heart attack. he chain smokes throughout the film. lupe velez, 19 when this was released, is a feral heartbreaker and a warm, enchanting comedian. she has real chemistry with fairbanks. its funny to watch her aggressively rest her cheek against his lower abdomen and then beat him viciously when he steals a quick kiss. i’m sure the cheek resting and other bold flirtation were in fairbanks’ script but equally sure the booty banditry and resultant head pounding were real. eve southern, as “the girl of the shrine,” is beautiful, but looks like the source of her bliss is more likely opium rather than “the opiate of the masses.” on that note, “the mystery of the leaping fish,” included on this dvd, is the kind of movie that inflicts more brain pain than anyone would ever believe without experiencing it themselves. taking advantage of sherlock holmes habit of injecting a seven percent solution of cocaine to keep his brain sharp during down time, tod “freaks” browning presents him as a fiend with a bandolier of syringes who sometimes injects himself less than a minute apart. this is only the springboard from which this movie dives headfirst into wtfwt? exploitation. don’t miss the scene where it is revealed how “the little fish blower” (bessie love) earns her living.
