HITCHCOCK A LA FRANCAISE
Thie Hitchcock inspired thriller is largely a vehicle for the director's wife, Stephane Audran.
A sort of poorwoman's Deneuve, Audran is so limited in her emotonal range that she can't even register shock or horror when she discovers the mutilated body of a young girl. Nor can she express simple terror when a serial killer is about to cut her up with a huge knife. About the only convincing emotion Audran is able to convey is compassion for the killer! Just as Hitch's VERTIGO suffers from Kim Novak's limited abilities, so LE BOUCHER would have been a more satisfying film with a more talented actress in the lead role. And just ignore such absurdities as a teacher allowing pre-teens to picnic on the side of a cliff! Or orderlies allowing a man to bleed to death while waiting for the world's slowest elevator! Who needs reality, anyway?
