All "Fat" and no meat.
This movie was spoiled by two things. 1) Donnie Wahlburg's acting. 2) Chow's English dialog. All Chow needs is a gun and his Kung-Fu....no words. This film was a disappointing use of Chow's abilities. Basically the dragging story line involves a group of china town cops who are on the take...at various levels. (ie the good guys only steal a little bit).

A TAKEBACK TO THE COP FILMS OF THE 1970's
The Corruptor was one of those films that at first seems a little slow, maybe even boring but at it's core it's one of the most realistic cop films around today. After watching it, I kept thinking about the cop films of the late 60's and early 70's. Films like "Bullit" with Steve McQueen, "The French COnnection" with Gene Hackman, and "Serpico" with Al Pacino. Those three films were some of the most realistically portrayed films I'd ever seen. You watch them and you know that's what being a cop is really like, that is how things really go down. The character is more developed and important than the explosions, the car chases and the shoot outs. I guess being that most of those films were based on real people and real cops like Popeye Doyle and Frank Serpico. But The Corruptor takes it's core from real life. A few years ago in New York's Chinatown, the Fukanese Triad gangs were taking over the streets and there was a lot of violent bloodshed and killings. The gangs were very coldhearted and the writer of the film did extensive homework on the reality of being a cop in the underworld of Chinatown. Director James Foley, who has always been good at bringing a sense of reality to his films, another great film of Foley's I recommend is "At Close Range" with Sean Penn and Christopher Walken. Chow Yun Fat is such a great talent and hopefully the United States will get a movie starring him that shows them his incredible range as an actor. This film shows versatility in him, he's funny, dramatic, and intense in the action sequences. But this is not a film for everyone, mostly for serious film fans and people who like a little reality in their cop movies.
