A Fong Sai Yuk story w/ Meng Fei
Prodigal Boxer (aka: Kung Fu Punch of Death) is a 1973 film from mainland
China starring Meng Fei as Sai Yuk and Yasuaki Kurata [see Jet li's Fist of legend]as the villain, Iron Hand Tan.
Meng Fei plays cultural icon Fong Sai Yuk, during the phase when he is still living at home. An interesting aside is that Fong Sai Yuk is
said to have been trained by his mother- and this story holds to that, because his father is a real push over in the skills department.
The story is basic and I'm not going to give
a long description. I'll just say that despite its standard plot, its worth seeing because
of its lush open scenery [something you didn't see much in Shaw movies, which are almost always recogniazabe sets and often
very dark, which is what was often wanted].
The picture quality is great and the dubbing is pretty decent. Actually, I wanted
to see this because it had Kurata in it. This movie can be purchased pretty cheaply
on DVD or VHS if one looks around. If you know Meng Fei [Invincable Kung Fu Trio], then you'll
enjoy seeing him here, as he is really young and lithe - far too skinny to actually kick Kurata's
can in real life! - but hey, he's Fong Sai Yuk here, so its possible, right?
On a scale of 10 I'd give it 6 1/2 stars. Not exceptional
but well worth a viewing.
