this was produced, written, and directed by edward wood jr. if you’ve seen “plan 9 from outer space” or any other movie with a high wood content, you probably know what you’re in for. if not, god help you. no one else has ever written dialogue, created characters, or developed a plot like wood. between the sub-dinner playhouse acting skills and wood's drunken, eccentric direction, the delivery of line after line is cause for much cruel amusement. the genial boss cop has a pet finch he plays with. cops pull out their pistols for no apparent reason during casual conversation. lobo's scar has to be the least convincing makeup effect i've ever seen, with the edges of the square patch its on clearly visible. i was really hoping this would be like "the bride and the beast," the wood movie where the beautiful woman falls in love with the gorilla, but there is very little overt sleaze in this one. however, just having the film stock in the vicinity of wood guarantees you'll want a shower after watching this. this was bela lugosi's last movie. it wasn't a very dignified way to go out, but, hey, a check's a check. he is replaced with very crude use of a double in some of the ending.
