a u of l professor is such a big fan of betty boop’s sexuality that he hosted a free screening / lecture on the subject that included some of the material on this tape. a huge predatory circus manager sexually harasses betty, rubbing her bare thighs and pawing her ass. there’s ass humor, a lot of it sensuous, in most of the episodes. then she narrowly escapes a ship full of horny pirates whose leader mentally lifts her skirt. one episode has a brown betty doing the hula to music “recorded by the royal samoans.” she wears only a thin lei for a top and treats us to a lengthy game of peek a boob, giving a generous, brief flash in a final turn. for some inexplicable reason, the “polynesians” are presented as offensive, african, cannibal caricatures. bimbo [her dog / boyfriend!] disguises himself with dirtface, is taken for a v.i.p., but is outed when a rainstorm washes his face. other high / low points come at the end, in the collaborations with musicians of the day. the three cab calloway numbers are great, eerie, imaginative pieces, that include some of calloway’s amazing stage act. two of the episodes, “minnie the moocher” and “st. james infirmary,” are well known from inclusion in various compilations. the one with “the old man of the mountain” is less well known, and truly weird. there are references to cocaine and opium use, including the line “you have to bang the gong if you want to get along with [me].” the collaboration with louis armstrong, “i’ll be glad when you’re dead, you old rascal you,” is a welcome record of his early act, but has highly offensive elements, including repeated cross cutting of armstrong’s huge, floating head with that of a pursuing “cannibal.” rudy vallee puts a drag on the tape, but the animation accompanying his second number is hard to believe. the exterior of a party house is shown, with about 20 individual scenes shown in chiaroscuro, with about twice as many subjects all bopping insanely, locked into the same beat. inside, we see betty standing in a huge punch bowl, serving punch with a bath sponge! in the first frame, she is waist deep, with the punch up to the hem of her skirt in the rest. there is very little distinction, as her skirt doesn’t fall very far below her waist. this raises the ante on the old “drinking champagne out of a lady’s slipper” cliche pretty high. in a stunningly sick moment, one pervert says “make mine chocolate!” the last frame is a sop to the prudes, making it appear she is standing behind a clear bowl. the first vallee episode has an obese betty portraying “kansas city kitty.”
