actually “dark habits” (1983) predates “sister act” by 9 years. there are nuns with names like “sister rat of the sewers” and “sister manure.” the mother superior is a heroin abusing lesbian. another lesbian nun writes trashy (heterosexual) pulp romance novels. yet another nun, whom the mother superior saved from a murder rap by lying on the stand, gets her religious visions from lsd supplied by the mother superior. the “guest” lounge singer asks for and gets cocaine for the big party finale. she’s on the run from the cops after her boyfriend was poisoned by bad dope. it was a toxic relationship and she may or may not be responsible for the actual toxin. the mother superior has already sold the altar and other church items to get drug money. in the end, she arranges for a trip to thailand to smuggle heroin to pay for a new order (and supply her habit). they have a pet tiger one nun plays bongos for while feeding (hand to mouth), to remind him of africa. another nun who left for africa before the start of the movie got eaten by cannibals, and had a loin-clothed, johnny weismuller looking boy that was raised by monkeys. a nun and a priest, sewing buddies, decide to get married. sewing, and the glam kitsch results, gets a lot of play here. almodovar shows a determined intent to be shocking here. writing it up, it sounds wild, but it came across pretty dull. maybe i’m just jaded. it was like almodovar and his drinking buddies came up with a bunch of cheap jokes, and he neglected to write adequate transitions between them. his having produced “accion mutante” makes the feminism the critics find in his work suspect. writing and directing this movie makes his sanity suspect. cluelessly, the distributor chose to describe this movie as “comedy / gay” on the dvd label. i don’t think this movie is likely to please a “lesbian interest” audience. being afraid of being thought “gay” by store clerks will put off nunsploitation hounds who might otherwise fall for it. the core of that crowd would be disappointed anyway. the singer is the closest thing to sexy, and she only gives one brief flash (to torment the mother superior, who is her biggest fan). there’s no sex shown, no gore, and the only torture is self inflicted and very tame. between the sabotage of almodovar and the distributor, this potentially hilarious movie is going to have a hard time finding an audience.
