Carter Wong/ Polly Shang Kwan
18 Bronzemen is a chop socky from 1976 [before Gordon's Enter the 36 Chambers!] with a basic revenge storyline. From brns.com, a terrific site for reviews: "When the Qing dynasty is comes to power they send killers to do away with a Ming General and his family. Only the baby boy, Shaolung, escapes and he is placed with the Shaolin monks at the age of five. Another young boy, Tianjun, also joins the Shaolin Temple and the two of them eventually become friends over the years. Shaolung grows up to be Tien Peng, while Tianjun becomes the morose Carter Wong. Both have been told from a young age that they have a special mission to perform when they leave the temple - Shaolung to kill his father's murderer, but Tianjun's remains a mystery." The 18 Bronzemen is considered to be a classic amongst enthusiasts, for whom the appearance of the 18 Bronzemen must have been quite novel in 1976. Actually, the effect does hold up pretty well (for the painted dudes), and makes me think that a remake of this flick could be an effective one. This movie was the first one I ever saw with the irresistibly cute Polly Shang Kwan (May Buddha Bless her), and so I'm fond of it. Her character is feisty and tenacious, and is a real boost for the movie. This is definitely worth viewing, though I agree with the rating given by the above mentioned site: 6 and 1/2 stars out of 10 Matt
