<[:-} "you did all right"
this is good stuff. willis "obie" o'brien ("king kong"), ray harryhausen's mentor, did the stop motion, giant, drooling, plutonic scorpions, inchworms, etc. the dvd extras have a lot of good harryhausen / o'brien stuff, including a short tribute by harryhausen himself. the movie itself has a lot of psychotronic layering. the little scorpions squeak like mice. both of the "professors" could give indiana jones a run for the mirror, and they both carry pistols on their hips that come out at the slightest rustle in the underbrush. the obligatory, loveable, little boy in peril is 7 1/2 year old "juanito," who refuses to be left out of the fight against the creepy crawlies, protesting that he knows how to "ride very good...shoot very good." you know you're not in the typical, sanitized sci-fi of the '50s when you see the real cow with its ass bitten off. given my incurable obsession, i was most impressed with "senorita teresa alvarez" (mara corday), the young, single ranch owner / boss who has to be the inspiration for barbara stanwyck's "big valley" role. (its only after seeing stanwyck go through men like a riding mower in her "pre-code" films that i get the undoubtably intentional double entendre behind "big vallley.) she's convincingly commanding and virtuous (in the roman sense) while still being very much the tasty, melty (possibly bra-free) sweater girl. she has a bit of raquel welsh about her. when the studly dudley american professor surprises her with a kiss, she wonders what she's doing, and he assures her "you did all right." i think my favorite line in the movie was: "every child in the world is born single. please try to profit more than i did by the experience." a 1957 mexican (english language) movie, "black scorpion" is very refreshing in its representation of mexican culture, something otherwise "politically correct" hollywood still cannot bring itself to do correctly.
