<[:-} a window into hell
this is a touchy one. christopher lee was always at his best playing an evil character in a horror movie, and this may well be the most extreme example. this film espouses the belief that the rhodesian government, both local and national, was so committed to the rule of law that they would hunt down and kill a rogue white police officer seeking revenge for the brutal rape, scalping, and murder of his wife by black terrorists. it also presents the relations between the “africans” (who always address whites as “mambo”) and the settlers as being not just peaceful, but warm and loving, except for a handful of troublemakers that were so fearsome that they survived because people were too afraid to turn them in. worse, i suspect the hideous “albino” character, “whispering death,” played by horst frank [!] was intended to be nelson mandela! much is made of his university education. the fact that he is an “albino” falls into the old propaganda line that black rebellion was the result of contamination by white ideas. given this sickening set of assumptions, this movie has a very strong internal logic, indicating that those involved took this film very seriously. it is a very well made propaganda movie for a regime that used the “street sweeper,” a drum-fed shotgun that is so infamous i’ve never seen one in the steel, to control “riots.” to give some perspective, steven hatfill, the american black-ops germ warfare expert who is the prime suspect in the recent anthrax attacks here in america, was working for the rhodesian government in 1979 and 1980 when 10,000 cases of anthrax were reported.
