A TRUE Sci-Fi Classic.
If you are into Sci-Fi,"Things To Come" is a MUST see. Legendary!

<[:-} perhaps "you've been smoking too much" of "the gas of peace"
this third eye frying assault on sanity has incredibly pretentious dialogue that reminded me of "creation of the humanoids," though without the clever, incomparable plot development of that movie. the first hour nearly put me to sleep, but then the futuristic section began, and the constant onslaught of cold, campy sci-fi images began. i was actually a little nauseated at the end. the dialogue has obvious drug references, including "you can overdo a stimulant." it would seem someone did! i'm not a historian, but i'm sure the images of a monorail and a helicopter were pretty advanced stuff. they didn't do as well at foretelling rocketry, but did come up with a gigantic "space gun" that contained successively smaller space guns within, like rocketry stages. the dialogue is full of such nuggets as "the new world of united airmen," "and now for the rule of the air," "now we've got the chance to use the gas of peace on someone," and "you've got the subtlety of a bullfrog." the end has a stand-off between the ruling technocrats who want unlimited scientific advancement, which they believe is "magnificent," and the luddite insurgency that wants an end to all scientific progress, which they believe is "monstrous," before it can be spread beyond earth's confines. its notable that this 1936 movie, based on h.g. well's book, which seems very prescient in many ways, had travel to the moon yet to be accomplished in 2036. i screwed up and rented the vhs tape, not knowing the dvd was available.
