THIS IS PRETTY MUCH STRAIGHT RUSS MEYER (NOT A BAD THING). THERE IS INTENTIONAL CAMP, AND (PROBABLY) UNINTENTIONAL HUMOR IN THE (APPARENTLY PARTIALLY IMPROVISED) "TOUGH CHICK" DIALOGUE. THERE IS THE USUAL ABILITY TO PORTRAY AMORAL PEOPLE. WHAT SETS IT ABOVE HIS OTHER STUFF (DESPITE THE PAUCITY OF SKIN) IS THE AWESOME PRESENCE OF THE MAGNIFICANT TURA SATANA. I WAS SURPRISED TO LEARN THAT MEYER HAD BEEN AN ARMY COMBAT PHOTOGRAPHER IN WWII.

The camp litmus test
A movie buff colleague of mine says, "I don't do camp," and he won't venture into territory like this. He's about at the point I was at his age, with a bit of an upturned nose and some preconceptions. I managed to watch this famous Russ Meyer opus a day before I finally got around to catching up with Clint Eastwood's "Mystic River," the kind of competent self-serious movie that my buddy would consider greater cinematic art over Russ Meyer any day. As it is, "Mystic River" is mainly a policier with an uncredited nod to Fritz Lang's 'M" and with lots angst-ridden baggage tacked on--a film intentionally meant to be high art and to be seen as such. And yet, to me, Meyer's trash classic--never intended to be art--is the better film. The Eastwood film--based on a good novel, populated by topnotch thespians and crafted by top Hollywood technicians--could have been made just as well by any top or even second-tier director. But Meyer's film is the product of a genuine auteur. It bears a stamp unmistakable; impossible to attribute to any other filmmaker. There's plenty of good criticism out there on Meyer's work, so I'm not going to go into a lot of analysis of the proto-feminist significance and whatnot of this and Meyer's other films. Taken together, the heroic way Meyer frames his protagonists, the glee with which he renders their anger and peppers it all with spaced-out dialogue that's both intentionally and unintentionally humorous--not to mention its comic book absurdity (car vs. muscle man in duel of death, for instance)--all make for an unforgettable experience. Long after this film ends, the rage of Tura Satana's voice echoes through your skull. Unlike "Mystic River" this is a film I will be anxious to see again. *** Faster Pussycat! Kill!
