this is a cringe-a-minute frat boy wet dream. hawaiians, including the chief's daughter, dive for trinkets thrown by swashbuckling white yachtsmen (complete with blazers), then throw a poi feast (fodder for many patronizing jokes from the yachtsmen) where women dance provocatively for the "native" men who then throw them over their shoulders and run off with them, presumably with sexual abandon. johnny "white man" (his own sobriquet: "white man wants you to stay with him forever") grabs the chief's daughter and tries to follow suit, only to be told that she (presumably only she) is "taboo," reserved for "a native prince." later, she teases johnny by swimming around the boat. he chases her through the water to the beach, and she is spared from a she-was-asking-for-it rape only because she instantly falls in love after one forced kiss. it quickly degenerates into an even weirder Anti-tarzan tragic-love fantasy. at one point he tells her quite romantically that he had planned to pump her and dump her but was surprised to find out he cared. this was probably shockingly "liberal" stuff back then (1932 according to one character) and is typical of the racist sexual predation fantasies that seem to motivate most white liberals, through the norman lear era and on to today.
