CAINE CAIN'T SAVE THIS ONE
With top drawer talent like Michael Caine and Tilda Swinton under the direction of Norman Jewison, excellence is to be expected. Just why excellence is not attained is hard to say in a few words. Caine is a right-wing Catholic fanatic who is being pursued by two groups for crimes he committed against Jews in WW2: Swinton is a judge who wants to bring him to trial and the other, unknown group has sent out hit-men to kill him. Despite being 70ish and having a serious heart condition, Caine improbably manages to kill, not one, but two, would-be killers. I won't ruin the ending by disclosing his ultimate fate. Shot in Provence with an all British cast playing Frenchmen, there's not a single word of French spoken in the whole film! The sunny beauty of the region is mostly ignored in favor of shots of narrow small town streets. But perhaps the main flaw lies in the mostly despicable character of the man being pursued. The viewer doesn't want this nasty man to escape! On the contrary, we want him to be caught or killed. Lack of sympathy for the pursued ensures that the viewer is necessarily somewhat emotionally disengaged. Finally, with such a mundane title, it's not surprising that this movie was (and will be) ignored. Having said that, Caine, as usual, is pretty darn good!
