I have to agree, I mean for what it was the film was enjoyable, but nowhere lived up to my expectations. More history deffinatly could of helped this film, though Rush was good, but I think Phoenix, and Caine steal the show. 6 out of 10

FOR GOOD OR BAD, THIS FILM GLOSSES OVER DE SADE'S HEINOUS "PHILOSOPHY" TO EXAMINE FREE-THOUGHT vs. AUTHORITARIAN ENFORCEMENT OF CONFORMITY, MAKING A SILK PURSE FROM A PIG'S COLON. I BELIEVE IT IS BELIEVABLE AND SYMPATHETIC RUSH'S PRESENTATION OF AN INDOMITABLE SPIRIT THAT MATTERS. DUE SHOULD BE GIVEN TO KATE WINSLETT. HER WELL-DRAWN CHARACTER'S ENTHUSIASM FOR FORBIDDEN FRUIT RESCUES THIS FILM FROM LOCKER ROOM INFANTILISM.
