A Wong Jing Extravaganza
If you don't know who Wong Jing is, he tends to direct movies with a very rapid and often sureal style of presentation. His characters and sets often look like they came right out of a comic book, despite the historical or mythological undertones of the story in question - he reminds me of a demented Tsui Hark (Black Mask, Warriors of Zu Mountain). Wong Jing also directed Last Hero in China, and a remake of Legend of the Liquid Sword. I think he and Jet make great movies together, though I don't always like his other work. This movie features not only Jet Li, but also Tze Miu, cute and sexy Chingmy Yau, Deannie Yip, and Ng Man-Tat. Also lending his considerable talents to this movie is Shaw star, Wang Lung Wei! Famed choreographer/ Director Corey Yuen also serves as Action director in this movie. Jet Li plays a famed martial artist named Hung Shi-Kwan (?). Here's an excellent plot summery : Hung (Jet) is a wanted man. For his part in rebelling against the Emperor, his wife is killed and he goes on the run with his infant son. Several years pass. He trains his son Man Ting to follow in his warrior footsteps. Meanwhile, the Shaolin Temple and the Heaven and Earth Association have joined together to help bring down the government. The monks at the Shaolin Temple paint portions of a map on the backs of five young boys who are training at the temple. The map provides directions to a secret fortune that will finance the rebellion. The boys are to meet the leader of the Heaven and Earth Association so he can find the fortune. The father of one of the boys gets mixed up with the Notorious Mother and Daughter, a conning and thieving duo. Hijinks and high kicks ensue." The "new legends" refere to Jet's son and five other little boys who do a great great job in this movie- they are very funny and very cute. Tze Miu will surely rise to action cinema stardom in the upcoming years. There's lots of wire work and slap-stick humor as well (humor is a little strange at times). This movie tends to be well regarded by Jet Li fans, and I agree that it is a tremendous load of fun and holds up to repeated viewings, so its nice to own as well. Go get it! I give it 8 bold stars out of 10! Matt
