ALI McGRAW IN A GARBAGE TRUCK!
Coming five years after Arthur Penn's classic BONNIE AND CLYDE, THE GETAWAY (1972)features Steve McQueen (42 and looking it) and Ali McGraw (24, a model posing as an actress) as his wife. McQueen is a convict who has been released early because McGraw put out for a corrupt prison official. McQueen resents this and is therefore sullen and angry with her throughout the film. These two rob a bank with the assistance of more corrupt cops and take off for Mexico with the loot, the bad cops in hot pursuit. There are a couple of decent car chases, but one of the most memorable scenes finds our two anti-heroes about to be squashed in the back of a garbage truck. Not too surprisingly, McGraw energes with hardly a smudge on her pretty face--a true supermodel to the end! Unlike B&C, this film ends "happily"--the robbers kill all the bad cops and get away with the loot. Oh yes, their gang kills a bank guard too, but bank guards are about as important as potted plants in the eyes of Hollywood! For McGraw & McQueen fans and those who like to see criminals come out on top.
