this kirk douglas movie takes the floyd collins trapped in a cave tragedy and places it in collapsing indian ruins in contemporary (1951) new mexico. douglas plays an obnoxious, aggressive, disgraced, ex-new york, reporter that probably would get himself killed within a month in real life, rural, 1950s new mexico. tatum, douglas’ character, takes his inspiration from the spectacle surrounding collins’ slow death, and uses it to explain his strategy. tatum, lorraine minosa (the collins characters wife), the sheriff, and smollett, the county engineer, conspire to stretch a rescue that could be done in 12 hours out to almost a week. tatum gets a big story, lorraine gets rich off the rubberneckers at the minosa’s tourist trap, and the sheriff thinks the publicity will get him re-elected. smollett is intimidated into going along. employment is created for the locals when lorraine needs to hire help. before the end a carnival has set up next door, and kicks back to lorraine. leo minosa slowly goes mad in the hole.
