When maverick Henry Fonda is nominated for Secretary of State, he finds that he has lots of enemies. Since every vote counts, the Chairman of the sub-comittee (Don Murray) is threatened with exposure of his homosexual relationship with a soldier many years ago if he doesn't vote against Fonda. It's this gay element that made the Alan Drury novel and this film so controversial in the early sixties. Charles Laughton chews up the scenery as a cantankerous southern Senator. Walter Pidgeon makes a nice Senator, but Franchot Tone as the President and Lew Ayres as the VP are nothing special. As for the plot, director Preminger's version of a Senate hearing bears the same relation to reality as a Perry Mason trial does to an actual trial. And one could ask: what is so special about a Secretary of State anyway? Since the President is dying, his nominee would most likely by replaced by his successor. And the ending is ridiculously contrived. Although often regarded as one of the better American political films, given the top drawer talent involved, I found it largely unconvincing.
