INTERESTING, BUT.......
With a population seemingly gathered from all four corners of the globe, Los Angeles has been dubbed "The Capital of the Third World." Instead of living harmoniously together, however, in director Haggis' film every ethnic group despises every other group. Racial prejudice is the theme in this ensemble piece featuring big name stars Matt Dillon, Sandra Bullock and Don Cheadle among others. Most of the characters are angry about something and that anger is most often directed at members of another ethnic or racial group. Some of the encounters are forced and unconvincing at best: Dillon callously molests a black woman one day and rescues her from a burning car the next(!); Cheadle as a police investigator finds the body of his murdered car-jacking younger brother; an Iranian storekeeper is so apparently stupid that he can't understand that the door of his store (not just the lock) needs repairing and goes after the locksmith with a gun when his store is broken into. Of course, the bigotry of the LAPD is taken for granted. (I've never understood why this force should be more bigoted or corrupt than any other.) A bleak, if ultimately unconvincing portrayal of race relations in the Big City (and, by implication, America as well.) The almost constant depressing, droning score from Mark Isham adds to the bleak tone. You'll have to watch this film at least twice to get all the connections. Interesting and never boring, but in the final analysis--unconvincing.
