Gordon Lui & Wang Lung Wei!
Return of the Master Killer aka Return to the 36th Chamber Ever heard of the Master Killer? It's the movie that practically put Gordon Liu on the map, making him one of the most recognizable 'bald headed' stars in the world. Well, Return of the Master Killer is not really a sequel to the first movie, but there is the similarity of the Shaolin motif. In the Return, Lui plays something of a con-man who winds up getting involved with the plight of a small group of fabric dyers who are being brutalized by an evil Manchu group led by superstar villain, Wang Lung Wei. Whereas in Master Killer he was Monk San-Te, he impersonates him in this movie (the real San Te in this movie is played by Ching Chu)! So I guess he's a disciple of himself, or, his own master. At first Gordon doesn't know how to fight [they never do- that's why you get those long training sequences!], but he goes to Shaolin and there, under the pretext of "fixing the surrounding roof-tops" San-Te gets him into shape. We can see not only new skills, but a new level of personal integrity creep into Gordon's character as labors incessantly to acquire skill. He is able to 'watch and learn' as he looks down from the scaffolding into each of the temple's training areas. He practices while he works. He's also a prodigy of course, and when the time comes he leaves and confronts the baddies. This movie is 'good' Shaw movie, and the talents of Wang Lung Wei. Not as good as Fists of the White Lotus, and certainly not as good as Dirty Ho, its still well worth seeing. Also featured in this movie are the kicking skills of Korean taekwondo master Kwan Young Moon, who appeared in Hell's Wind Staff , Ring of Death, Dragon Lord and Project A (yes, the Chan-meister). This movie is NOT as cool as the amazing Master Killer (aka The 36 Chambers of Shaolin), but as I said, is a treat worth seeing. I'd give it 3 and a half out of 5 stars. Matt
