Early and intense Ti Lung movie
If you've seen 'A Better Tomorrow' (John Woo/ Chow Yun Fat), then you'll remember the guy who shared the lead with Chow, Ho. Well Duel of the Iron Fist (sometimes called D. of the Shaolin Fist, though there is no apparent) 'shaolin' connection) is a 1971 Shaw Brothers movie which served "as a precurssor to the Triad/Gangster genre". The story has the typical elements of gangsters, brothels, and revenge, but it is the 'nocturnal chill' and intense acting by a young Ti Lung which make this movie worth it. This movie came out before director Chang Cheh's classic Five Deadly Venoms, but carries the same 'film noir' quality - a certain darkness that later 70's and 80's films didn't retain. Crash Cinema has an excellent (dubbed) edition they released at regular SP speed. It looks like time (or carelessness) may have eroded the original print at parts, and (warning) the movie ends abruptly, but is absolutely worth viewing! Also stars the wry smiling David Chiang, who delievers an excellent and 'slightly' understated performance as a fierce and very aloof assassin called 'the Rover'! Whole lotta sword play and martial arts here - Ti Lung is very impressive and at times even reminded me of Bruce Lee in terms of stamina, endurance and pressence. Rock on Ti Lung!
