FINE 1949 NOIR/DRAMA
A consummate professional, Edward G. Robinson could always be counted on for a memorable performance. Even with a spotty Italian accent, he's great as a self-made banker with four disputing sons in this 1949 noir/drama from director Joseph L. Manckiewicz. Richard Conte is very good as the smart but crooked son at war with the other three. Cool redhead Susan Hayward (not to be confused with hot redhead Rita Hayworth) is the love interest. But the love story takes a decided back seat to the poisonous family conflict. Loosely based on the family that founded the Bank of America, this first rate drama is sure to satisfy. You can bet Scorsese had this film in mind when making THE GODFATHER.
