Chen Kwan Tai/ Shaw Bros!
A 1975 'classic' Shaw picture from Hong Kong. I saw this one in the theater back in the day so there is a nostalgic component for me. There are some very good performances here by Chen Kwan Tai, who plays the lead, Ma Teng; young Wang Yu (from Dirty Ho etc.), who plays his buddy-in-arms, the Emperor Yun Ching (evil bastich! I luv him!) is played very well by someone I don't know! D'oh!, and Ku Feng plays another evil bastich. The movie is about an emperor's obsession with a glorified head-chopper. The Emp. is paranoid and eager to execute anyone he damn well feels like. He has the weapon's inventor, Sing Ching, train 12 elite guards, who will vow eternal service to him. Ma Teng plays along until he realizes that the emperor is just a cold blooded murderer, who uses the term 'traitor' to instill fear in all subjects, irrespective of their loyalties. What we get is lots of intense drama, and lots of head-chopping. The costumes are very nice and the film even ventures out into the scenic and lush countryside. This movie is a treat, and good for repeated viewings, which I don't say about all old skool flicks. I give it 7 out of 10 stars. Beverly Wilshire has a DVD release of this movie, which is of so-so, standard quality (as in VHS) which varies from graininess to some sharpness as the film plays. The color and sound are consistent and good. It's absolutely worth renting or, if you can, go to a KMart and pick up the BW version for $4.99! Its worth having if you're an enthusiast, but not worth the $15 most on-line places will charge the un-weary traveler. It would be absolutely great if someone released a clear letter-boxed version! Beverly Wilshire, like most others releasing chop-socky on DVD, gets their prints from the same VHS tapes you can get anywhere else! I don't condone using a DVD format for use in inferior VHS dubbed releases! $4.99 is acceptable, but not preferred to say, releasing a high grade copy for more money. Let us pray for changes in the future. one of the best movies
you must rent this movie it is a excellent adventure for kungfu fans.I have seen it so many times i would like to see it agian and agian. The flying guillotine is a deadly weapon that will make your head spin for mercy. It's hard to predict where that weapon will land. I love the whole story of the begining to the end.
