BERGMAN MEETS VERMEER
Picture an Bergman film shot by 17th c. Dutch artist Vermeer & you will have some conception of this somber, beautifully austere work of the great Danish master, Carl Dreyer. Although slow moving & totally humorless, this story of forbidden love in 17th century Denmark is worth seeing if only for the sheer craftsmanship of its creator. Like Bergman? Try Dreyer.

!SPOILER ALERT! carl th. dreyer strikes again! this is not only a must see movie, it is a good one. the eerie cinematography, by karl andersson, is worth the watch all in itself. anna svierkier, as herlot’s marthe, the elderly witch who is tortured and executed, makes it so real i was cringing. the same way he subverted the vampire mythos and made it his own, dreyer puts a twist on burning at the stake that makes it seem as real as a documentary instead of the same tired old melodrama. there’s not a weak link in the cast. thorkild roose, as the rev. absalon pedersson, plays the tormented hypocrite so well i felt sorry for him all the while i wanted to see him toasted. lisbeth movin, as anne the heroine, kept my wholehearted sympathy as she moved from innocent to irretrievable outcast. perhaps dreyer’s strongest point is that he doesn’t waste time harping on the unfairly accused, he questions the rightness of persecuting women who truly believe they are witches, and perhaps really are, and dangerous ones at that.
